Better Late Than Never!
If I ever say I'm going to make a text based adventure game again, kindly slap me.
You Are A Rabbit is finally ready & released on itch.io! You can go get a copy here, or if you're a patron, go check out my page for your download!
So how did it go?
It started pretty well, to be honest. The actual technical side of it was fun to work out & structure, I even wrote a handy (invaluable, as it turned out) tool that let me check that every page had an appropriate path forwards without having to scour through it all. The animations went reasonably well, despite not being my strong suit, & I figured out some ok backing tracks so the game wasn't just silent the whole way through.
The sticking point was the writing. Now, I can write very quickly, just stream of consciousness sort of stuff, without reeeaally having to go back & rework things or agonising over details. Unfortunately, I grossly underestimated exactly how much writing would be involved in this project.
By the end I reached about 100 pages of text, totalling about 12,000 words, which is way longer than I'd planned for.
Lessons have been learned though, & moving forward I'll definitely be sticking to as much technical stuff as possible, while leaving anything required hefty writing, art, or sound to a "nice to have".
I'll be updating you all on Friday with the details of this weekend's game plans, but it should be a lot more code-heavy & a lot less 'typing for 12 hours'.
If you try out You Are A Rabbit, comment below, or on the itch page, or just send me a message directly to let me know if you enjoyed it! If you didn't, no need to let me know!
